While Malaysian food is almost the same as Singaporean food, the ones you can find in Malaysia are so much more flavourful. But that’s not all, Malaysian food is also cheap! What more can you ask for? Okay, less talk, more food – here are some cheap but really good food in JB that you have to try at least once!

1. Restoran Kin Hua

Ah yes, if there’s any way to start your day, it’s by having a typical Malaysian breakfast. Perfectly half boiled eggs, butter and kaya toast, and a kaw kaw black coffee – that’s what you should get here at Restoran Kin Hua. If you’re a heavy morning eater, then get the nasi lemak or mee goreng that will definitely fuel you up for your trip. Whatever your choice may be, we guarantee you’ll be coming back for more before you leave back to Singapore.

2. Salahuddin Bakery

Are you a fan of authentic and home made pastries? Then Salahuddin Bakery is a spot you have to visit. This bakery has been selling pastries of many kinds in Johor since 1937. In fact, you can find various pictures and articles on the wall of the original owner. Another great thing is that everything in this bakery is halal, so if you’re thinking of packing some back for your muslim friends, this is perfect.

4. Kam Long Curry Fish Head

You cannot leave Malaysia without trying out the curry fish head from Kam Long. The restaurant has been operating for over three decades and the recipe remains the same. If you’re wondering what kind of fish they use, it’s red snapper. Alongside that, you get generous portions of ladyfingers, long beans, tofu skin, and cabbage. Pair this with a plate of white rice and you’ll be in heaven.

5. Bukit Chagar Roti Canai

Here’s one for the early risers – want some roti canai for less than $1? Then you have to give Bukit Chagar Roti Canai a visit. You may have to ensure some queue when you arrive but rest assured it will be worth it. The roti canai here is flaky on the outside and fluffy on the inside, which makes it good to be eaten on its own. However, you can add some sugar or dip it in your favourite curry for some extra flavour.

6. Ah Hua Kway Teow @ ​​Restoran See Kee

Down for some hearty and soupy meals? We recommend Ah Hua Kway Teow at ​​Restoran See Kee. For some history on Ah Hua Kway Teow, it’s actually one of the oldest kway teow shops in Johor. Furthermore, the recipe remains the same from then till now, which makes it one of the most authentic tasting kway teow there is. 7. Restoran Hua Mui

8. Restoran Ya Wang

You’ve probably heard about the popular herbal duck in Johor. Well, this is where you can find it. And yes, it’s in an air-conditioned environment so you get to escape the hot and humid weather. When it comes to the duck, it’s not easy to find a spot that cooks it so well. The duck here is juicy and tender while the gravy adds a sweet and salty flavour. There are also other dishes you can try here like the char siew and herbal soups if you want a mix.
