Chinatown’s Chinese New Year Celebration Returns After A 2-Year Hiatus

It includes all-time favourite Festive Fair and Street Light-Up

After two years of virtual events, Chinatown’s Chinese New Year Celebration marks its return with  tons of existing physical festivities.

Apart from the Festive Fair, visitors can look forward to the annual street light-up, weekly stage shows and the Chinese New Year Countdown Party.

Hop into the year of the rabbit with the Chinatown Chinese New Year Street Light-Up. The festival features fascinating rabbit dioramas that are located along New Bridge Road, South Bridge Road, Eu Tong Sen Street, and for the first time ever, Upper Cross Street.

The towering 10-meter-tall centerpiece, which depicts the multi-generational rabbit family, is displayed at the junction of Upper Cross Street and New Bridge Road. While the stunning decorations that adorn the street are designed as part of the collaboration with the Singapore University of Technology and Design. 

Chinatown Chinese New Year Countdown Party 

Mark your calendars for 21st January 2023 as the festival will host a Countdown Party at Kreta Ayer Square on Chinese New Year Eve. The event will also be broadcast live on Channel 8 from 10.30pm. It will feature a stellar line-up of performances from Mediacorp artistes.

“We are excited to be welcoming the most important festive holiday on the Lunar Calendar back to  the streets of the historically significant precinct of Chinatown. The Chinese New Year Celebration  unites Singaporeans and international visitors across cultures and generations through a thrilling line up of festivities, and sets the stage for an auspicious, prosperous year ahead,” said Minister for  Communications and Information and Second Minister for Home Affairs, Adviser to Jalan Besar GRC  Grassroots Organisations (Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng), Mrs Josephine Teo. 

Chinatown Chinese New Year Celebration 2023 Festivities 

The  Chinatown’s Chinese New Year Celebration 2023 will welcome guests with a slew of family-friendly festivities. The highly anticipated Festive Fair will include 280 stalls selling festive items spanning Smith Street,  Pagoda Street, Trengganu Street and Temple Street, and the weekly Stage Shows which are held over two  weekends at Kreta Ayer Square.  

Ms Lim Shoo Ling, Director, Arts and Cultural Precincts, Singapore Tourism Board, said, “We look  forward to welcoming both locals and visitors to the Chinatown Chinese New Year celebrations, and  to experience the offerings within the vibrant Chinatown precinct. Beyond the exciting line-up of  activities, we also hope the celebrations provide a deeper insight into Singapore’s rich Lunar New Year  traditions, and inspire visitors to discover more about Singapore’s unique multi-cultural heritage.” 

They also partnered up with Sqkii, a local gamification startup, to host ‘兔来运转’ (The Lucky Rabbit)’ game. Visitors can visit the Chinatown precinct and complete the tasks for a chance to win exciting prizes. The game will be available until 5th February.

Adopt a Lantern Initiative 

‘Adopt a Lantern’ is part of the initiative to make Singapore a sustainable place. Visitors will be given repurposed street lanterns to showcase their spirit for the festive season.
