See the Singapore River reimagined through New Waves' art

One of the crowd-favourite festivals in the country, Light to Night Festival 2022, is back to unite all arts and culture lovers to experience an exciting suite of creative interventions, workshops, and programmes at Civic District. Asian Civilisations Museum will open its doors to the public with New Waves as part of the festival.

Explore the Singapore River and its stories as told and imagined through multi-media installations, a modern-day barter market, artist workshops, and craft activities. Walk into the installation on ACM Gallery Trail: Unexpected Objects to see what the gallery has to offer that will let you emerge into a new light.

Memory Trails by Debbie Ding

Where:
ACM Garden

Taking inspiration from her previous work, Here the River Lies, Debbie created Memory Trails to reinterpret the textual dataset she has collected. It shows two glowing doorways on ACM Garden that represent an alternate, visionary views of the Singapore River. Moreover, from her Here the River Lies, the artist invited her audience to share their memories (real or imaginative) to create a large-drawn map. Memory Trails includes those 1800 stories collected; a re-telling of memory, imagination, and fantasy.

Debbie Ding is a visual artist and technologist whose work ranges from historical research and urban geography to visions of the future. She uses the information collected to reword and reappropriate to create a different construction of knowledge.

As the River Flows by Chong-li Chuan and Casey Chen

Light & Sound Installation
When to View: 14, 15, 21, 22 January 2022, Fridays and Saturdays, 5 to 9:30pm
Where: ACM River Room, L2

Learn more about the Singapore River presented by Chong-li and Casey with their As the River Flows collaboration. Experience a unique sound and light show that is inspired by stories, oral histories, and sound. In addition, the artists will take you to the past, present, and future of the river.

Chong-li Chuan is a composer that is passionate about philosophy, culture, and arts. His works mainly focus on music composition, sound design, site-specific art, installation, free improvisation, and exploring sound & light collaboration. On the other hand, Casey Chen is a multi-disciplinary artist who is versed in all-things aesthetic. His works are all about art and design for different fields such as brand, jewellery, etc.

The River Connects by Ong Kian Peng

Immersive Art Installation organised by the National Library Board
When to View: 14 January – 3 February 2022, All Day
Where: ACM Foyer, L2

The River Connects by the artist highlights the bridges along the Singapore River. To understand further, it explores the human connection on the river. To achieve this, the installation references the collection of archives and 3D-scanned images of the bridges. The audience can take part in this interactive art while seeing a new, different perspectives. This work is a part of a project “Curiocity: Places & Perspectives” by the National Library Board and Archives Blueprint 2025 (LAB25).

Ong Kian Peng is a media artist whose works combine art, technology, and the environment. His works show immersive and reflective environments that lets you see alternative visions and imagination of our relationship with nature.

ACM Gallery Trail: Unexpected Objects

There’s more to these objects than meets the eye. That being said, the audience will enjoy a self-guided trail that shows the quirky to unexpected stories behind the various objects displayed at ACM.

Drop in Craft: Design Your Family Crest

Create Your Own – Activity

Ever wanted to create your own family heirloom? Now’s your chance! Participants are given the chance to design their own family crest on a ceramic plate provided.

Barter Market at ACM

Barter Market
When to Visit: 28 & 29 January 2022, 6:30-9pm
Where: ACM River Room, L2

Next, get to experience modern-day barter trading using handmade objects or live art experiences and trade them off for your own objects, stories, or dreams pertaining to the Singapore River. Visitors are invited to bring their own item or experience to trade. Items to be traded are limited to 50 pieces per day.

The Unexpected Objects trail also comes with a small-group tour to unveil the intriguing stories behind the objects displayed. Limited spaces available so make sure to book your tickets in advance!

Next up, get to know the making of the audio experience for As the River Flows with sound artist & composer, Chong-li Chuan. The artist will share the process of the installation, framework, and demonstration on creating basic audio techniques.

Lastly, delve deeper into the As the River Flows with artist and designer, Casey Chan, as he shares the making of the light design. He will share how the light show came to be, and the layers of sound, light, and context behind it. The artists shares their inspiration and will demonstrate how it was assembled.
