An automated tufting gun that quickly forces needles into the cloth to transform errant strands into eye-catching designs only requires a little skill to use.

Tufting is a textile skill similar to knitting or embroidery traditionally used to create rugs and it has recently made a comeback. Especially in this era of mass manufacture, and what draws so many people to handcrafted goods is their originality and sentimental value.

There’s nothing like taking home works of art we’ve made ourselves and displaying them with pride on our shelves. Glitz welcomes you to check out our list of the best tufting workshops in Singapore.

What Is Tufting?

Similar to tie-dyeing and baking, the traditional weaving method of tutting is noted for its relaxing effects. It is a technique for producing rugs that involves laying yarn or wool strands on a frame and punching them through with a tufting tool that resembles a gun.

Tufting is the process of creating a loop-shaped opening in a backing material with a needle. These loops can give the tufted region texture, dimension, and, if trimmed, a velvet-like appearance depending on the height of the loops.

During the tufting stage of the textile manufacturing process, a thread is inserted on the primary foundation. It is a time-tested technique for making warm garments, especially mittens. After the knitting is finished, short U-shaped loops of additional yarn are placed into the fabric from the outside so that their ends point inwards.

How long does it take to tuft a rug?

One of the main benefits of tufting is its speed: a person working on a loom can produce a handmade carpet of one square metre in one day. Depending on the size of the carpets, hand-tufting now easily can take up to two hours but mostly for beginners usually take up to four hours.
