If you somehow missed it, Netflix has just released Part 1 of the highly anticipated third season of its hit regency romance series, Bridgerton. This season, based on Julia Quinn’s fourth novel in her best-selling Bridgerton series, Romancing Mister Bridgerton, follows the love story of Penelope Featherington (also known as the ton’s gossip monger, Lady Whistledown), and Colin Bridgerton. If you’ve finished binge-watching the first four episodes, prepare for a hold-up as the final four episodes will be released on June 13, 2024. Dreading the wait? Fill the gap with these recent book to TV adaptations while waiting for Bridgerton Season 3 Part 2 — we’ve even included a few upcoming series that might become your next favourite!

We Have Our Eyes On These Book to TV Adaptations

1. 3 Body Problem

3 Body Problem is a science fiction television series currently streaming on Netflix, written by the infamous Game of Thrones alums David Benioff and D. B. Weiss alongside Alexander Woo. The show draws inspiration from the first novel of the same name in Liu Cixin’s Hugo Award-winning Chinese novel series, Remembrance of Earth’s Past. Can we interest you in a series about the arrival of aliens on Earth and the subsequent consequences for human civilisation told through a tale that weaves the past, present, and future together? It’s safe to proceed as 3 Body Problem has already been renewed for season 2.

2. A Gentleman in Moscow

Since you’re into Bridgerton, we’re guessing that historical dramas are more your thing, so Paramount+’s A Gentleman in Moscow might be a safer bet. Set in 1922 Russia, the eight-episode series is based on Amor Towles eponymous novel. Ewan McGregor stars as Count Alexander Rostov, a Russian aristocrat placed under house arrest in a luxurious hotel opposite the Kremlin upon his return home following the Bolshevik revolution. McGregor’s real-life wife, actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead, also stars in the series as, you guessed it, his love interest.

3. The Sympathizer

A series based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Vietnamese-American professor and writer Viet Thanh Nguyen, created by acclaimed director Park Chan-wook, and airing on HBO? Count us all the way in! Featuring a star-studded cast, including Robert Downey Jr. and Sandra Oh, The Sympathizer is a historical black comedy drama about the Captain, a North Vietnamese double agent in the South Vietnamese army, who escapes to the United States after the Vietnam War. What’s fun about this show is that Robert Downey Jr. plays multiple different villains somehow but hey, we’re not complaining.

4. Interview with the Vampire Season 2

Who could say no to watching a series based on Anne Rice’s iconic The Vampire Chronicles? The first season of AMC’s Interview with the Vampire was met with critical acclaim for daring to fully embrace the queer elements present in Rice’s original novels and even adding racial themes. Much like its name suggests, Interview with the Vampire revolves around the vampire Louis de Pointe du Lac giving an interview to journalist Daniel Molloy about his life as one of the undead. But when you’re centuries old, can you truly recall what happened in the past? We can barely remember last week, so that’s a no from us.

5. Lady in the Lake

For a show set to premiere in less than two months, there’s barely any promotional material released for Apple TV+’s Lady in the Lake as of today. But what we do know about the series is that it’s based on Laura Lippman’s novel set in 1960s Baltimore. A murder mystery, it stars Natalie Portman as the main character, who’s obsessed with solving the murders of an 11-year-old Jewish girl and a 33-year-old Black bartender. Lady in the Lake will grapple with plenty of hard-hitting themes, including race, misogyny, and misogynoir — just in case you’re in the mood for something substantial in July.

6. The Sandman Season 2

We make the rules, so a book-to-TV adaptation still applies even if the book is a graphic novel. Beloved author Neil Gaiman wrote The Sandman, published by DC Comics. The Sandman is a popular fantasy comic series and one of the first to grace The New York Times Best Seller list. Netflix’s adaptation with Tom Sturridge as the titular character has done the source material enough justice to merit a second season. Immerse yourself in the tale of Morpheus, the living personification of dreams and ruler of the Dreaming. With a hunky immortal watching over you, you might just sleep better at night.
