A spine-tingling sequel
By: Balqis Ariffin / September 29, 2023

“The Nun 2,” the latest instalment in “The Conjuring” cinematic universe, has achieved box office success. As a sequel to “The Nun,” it draws horror enthusiasts into a chilling encounter between Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) and Valak. Critics have shared mixed reviews, and as a devoted follower of “The Conjuring” series, I can certainly relate. To be honest, some scenes left me petrified, but as the movie neared its conclusion, I found myself slightly disappointed with certain aspects of the storyline. My feelings about the film are somewhat mixed when it comes to the “The Nun 2” review. Scroll down to read my candid review of “The Nun 2.”

The Synopsis of The Nun 2

Spoiler alert! If you haven’t yet seen the movie and plan to do so, you may want to reconsider before reading beyond this point. Directed by Michael Chaves, the sequel to “The Nun” is set in 1956 and follows Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga). Tasked by the Vatican to investigate a series of terrifying incidents involving religious figures across Europe, she encounters gruesome murders, from immolations to hangings.

Joined by novice nun Debra (Storm Reid), they journey to France to uncover the truth behind a priest’s death. Racing against time to solve the harrowing puzzle, Sister Irene reunites with Maurice (Jonas Bloquet), who works as a handyman at a boarding school in France. Without divulging too many details, as they realise Valak’s sinister motives and seek religious relics, Sister Irene embarks on a quest. This battle between good and evil offers significant insights into Valak’s origin as a fallen angel and its potential end.

Impeccable Performances by the Cast of The Nun 2

Viewers who followed the first movie will notice how Taissa Farmiga’s character has evolved since her first encounter with Valak (Bonnie Aarons). Her performance, marked by unwavering confidence intertwined with subtle tenderness and rage, deserves applause. While Storm Reid’s addition serves more as a sidekick than an equally formidable character, it adds a touch of spunk that the movie may otherwise lack.

“The Nun 2” introduces several new characters along the storyline. Despite a lack of backstory, each character shines independently, adding depth to the film. Viewers will witness a different side of Jonas Bloquet, who reprises his role as Maurice. Transforming his character from the familiar Frenchie, he delivers an impeccable performance.

Kate (Anna Popplewell), a schoolteacher at the boarding school, develops a romance with Maurice. Alongside her daughter Sophie (Katelyn Rose Downey), these two new characters infuse the movie with genuine performances. Downey’s portrayal stands out in “The Nun 2,” as she captures viewers’ attention by bravely confronting her fears to assist Sister Irene against Valak.

Although “The Nun 2” surpassed our expectations compared to its predecessors, it seems the movie hasn’t entirely shaken off the flaws of the first instalment. The recurring theme of the battle between good and evil remains central to the storyline, particularly the goal of banishing Valak to hellfire using ancient religious relics.

As the plot becomes familiar to fans, the ending becomes somewhat predictable, occasionally bordering on dull. However, the film compensates with a plethora of heart-pounding jump scares and outstanding performances by the cast, making it a worthwhile watch. It’s no surprise that Maurice is revealed to be possessed, given that the first “Conjuring” movie hinted at Frenchie’s possession by Valak from the movie’s early scenes.

Furthermore, as the plot unfolds, Valak’s appearances may seem somewhat excessive, diluting the impact of her demonic presence and desensitising viewers to her. However, specific scenes, such as the possessed magazine newsstand, stand out as masterfully crafted, which is evident as stated by the majority of “The Nun 2” reviews. The frantic page-flipping sequence propels viewers through a crescendo of terrifying moments, culminating in Valak’s appearance, as seen in the trailer. This scene, along with its cinematographic excellence and eerie footsteps, is likely intended to surpass the scare factor of the Valak painting scene from the first movie.

Another memorable scene involves a demon goat, presumably linked to the chapel’s glass motif. The moment it descends the stairs towards the schoolchildren is truly unforgettable, introducing an unexpected monstrous creature alongside Valak and intensifying the scene for many viewers, including myself.

Throughout “The Nun 2,” the narrative follows a formula of escalating suspense, punctuated by quick cuts of terrifying moments. Despite this, the latest instalment has been lauded as a significant improvement over the first movie. With classic jump scare sequences and standout performances by the cast, “The Nun 2” is a must-see for moviegoers.
